New Year’s Day 2026 and 2027

Mauritius celebrates the New Year with major festivities on 31 December and two consecutive public holidays on 1 and 2 January. Mauritius is amongst a minority of nations that provide a two-day New Year public holiday each year.

Mauritius takes on a very exotic and sensational mood around the turning of the year. It’s a popular tourist vacation stop this time of year, and the fireworks and feasts and other events put on by local hotels and resorts is now an integral part of the celebrations.

Dancing and all-night parties are central to the mystique and aura of Mauritian New Year’s Eve bashes. The best places to get a view of free, very impressive fireworks displays is on Grand Bay, a bay surrounded by hotels, and at the island’s highest point, which is called Trou Aux Cerfs. Mashups of modern music styles like reggae, pop, and Mauritian “sega” fill the air all night.

On 1 January, it’s more of a family day. But note that both the first and second of January are public holidays in Mauritius, and celebrations sometimes last a whole week after New Year’s Day.
